About lluc

A Proven Advocate for Employees Across Canada

Lluc Cerda is an employment lawyer and the founder of Employment Law Advocates — a firm dedicated exclusively to representing employees across Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario.

With a proven track record before courts and tribunals in three provinces, Lluc brings the litigation experience of a national firm to every client he represents — whether that means securing an impactful negotiated settlement or winning at trial.

Employees come to Lluc when the stakes are high: a just cause allegation that ruins a reputation, an unenforceable termination clause used to wipe out an entire severance package, or unacceptable workplace changes an employer is trying to ram through. His approach is direct and results-focused — cutting through the noise to identify what matters and pursue it efficiently.

Before founding Employment Law Advocates, Lluc was a partner at a national labour and employment law firm, serving as Managing Partner of the Calgary office and Employment Law Practice Leader for Western Canada — overseeing a team of 11 lawyers across two provinces. That experience means Lluc understands exactly how employers and their counsel think. He uses that knowledge to his clients’ advantage.

Lluc successfully argued that a shift supervisor had been wrongfully dismissed following a biased workplace investigation — securing over $163,000 in damages against one of Canada's largest energy companies.

Alberta Court of King’s Bench

Idris v. Grand West Electric Ltd.

Secured wrongful dismissal damages for a 53-year-old Site Supervisor demoted to electrician upon return from medical leave — establishing that the demotion and resulting pay cut amounted to constructive dismissal.

Alberta Court of Justice

Henderson v. Slavkin et al

Argued that a 30-year employee's termination clause was unenforceable, increasing severance entitlements from 6 months to 15 months' pay — a 2.5x improvement for the client.

Ontario Superior Court of Justice

Hiebert v. Zimco Instrumentation Inc.

Successfully defended a product specialist of 11 years against for-cause allegations of poor performance, dishonesty, and insubordination — securing tens of thousands of dollars in wrongful dismissal damages.

Alberta Court of Justice

Taylor v. Hanley Hospitality Inc.

Successfully co-counselled an appeal overturning a lower court dismissal of a constructive dismissal claim. The Court of Appeal reinstated the claim and awarded costs — reversing a decision that had wrongly applied pandemic-era reasoning to strip the employee of her rights.

Ontario Court of Appeal

Mazanek v. Bill & Son Towing

Established employee status for a worker misclassified as an independent contractor, defeated serious for-cause theft allegations at trial, and secured 6 months' severance plus two years of owed vacation pay.
